Only in Brighton | 8 Sep 06

I've been using the bus a lot lately as I'm waiting for some parts for my bike ( - don't get me started on that one!). The only good thing is that I get to see bits of Brighton that I usually wouldn't. I decided to cut down a side street after getting off the bus and in the middle of a row of terraced, victorian(?) houses was Richards Garage! It's nice to see that not everything has been turned into flats, yet.

Obviously I've been tinkering because I wanted then pink to really stand out against the drab houses. Looking at it now, I think I'd like to get more of the adjacent houses in the shot so you get a better feel of the street.

Not a big fan of this selective colour thing but this works very well...made me smile. Philposted by [t e r r o r k i t t on September 9, 2006 1:32AM
i think the selective colour's very effective here. perhaps including more of the adjacent appartments as u mention, it would be more interesting but the detail is nice too. reminds me of my recent time spent in Dublin where there's still some reminders of the old city amongst all the new construction.posted by darragh on September 9, 2006 10:20AM
I especially like pink color on this one, looks really great. Also contrast is very good.posted by Kerly on September 9, 2006 3:51PM

This is awesome! I love how the pink stands out so vividly. Usually I'm not a huge fan of the b&w/color combination, but this really works.posted by Amanda on September 11, 2006 3:01AM

I'm not sure why people have issues with selective colour - it is a technique as any other.
I like the subject and the presentation but the photo falls to the left which is a bit distracting. Otherwise a very good imageposted by Digital Photo Ted on September 12, 2006 12:20AM
Thanks for all of the comments. I don't usually go for these type of images but it just seemed to call out for it this time.
As for the tilt - it was either line up the sign at the top or the pavement at the bottom, only the latter would have made all the verticals lean as well. Almost everything in Brighton is on a hill!posted by Kezza on September 12, 2006 12:33AM
What a beautiful image. I just love the composition - it compliments Richards's humble garage. I think Richard would love it too.posted by Michelle Bialowas on September 12, 2006 11:46AM
